Tribal Pride: An Anthropological and Historical Study of Tribal Heroes of Bastar
Abstract
The tribal society of the Bastar region (Chhattisgarh) is known for its diversity, cultural richness, and unique contribution to the freedom struggle. This study specifically focuses on the heroic figures who sacrificed their lives at local, regional, and national levels but whose stories have not been adequately documented in mainstream history.
It is noteworthy that some non-tribal heroes were also involved in conflicts in and around Bastar, but this study exclusively focuses on tribal heroes.
The objectives of the study were:
- To analyze the social, cultural, and political contributions of these heroes.
- To document their contributions through the anthropological and historical background of the Bastar region.
- To understand their struggles and bravery in a modern context and restore them in social memory.
The study used regional fieldwork, oral history collection, and secondary literature review. Primary sources included oral histories from tribal communities, traditional narratives, local records, and monuments. Secondary sources included publications from the Tribal Research Institute, Chhattisgarh, Dr. Rupendra Kavi’s “Tribal Development in Bastar” (2015), and other scholarly works.
The study reveals that Bastar’s tribal heroes were not only active in the freedom struggle, but their courage and leadership also influenced the social structure and cultural identity of their communities.
1. Introduction
Bastar, the tribal heartland of Chhattisgarh, is home to local heroes like Gunda Dhur, Gend Singh, Nagul Dorla, Ramotin Madiya, Jhara Sirha (Murias), and others. These heroes participated not only in local conflicts and uprisings but also contributed to the Indian freedom struggle.
In Bastar’s tribal culture, heroism is not limited to martial skills. It manifests as community leadership, judicial systems, cultural preservation, and social organization. Historical documentation of these heroes’ stories is insufficient.

5. Anthropological Significance
Preserving the contributions of these heroes strengthens social memory. Reports from the Tribal Research Institute and local records show that studying their contributions is culturally and historically essential.
6. Conclusion
Bastar’s tribal heroes were not only warriors in the freedom struggle but also played vital cultural and social roles that remain significant today. While non-tribal heroes also existed in Bastar, this study focuses exclusively on tribal heroes. The research suggests that these heroes’ memories should be reinstated in academic, literary, and public platforms. This study has no official government affiliation and is solely the author’s academic research work.
